Near Goryu and in Hakuba

Onsen (hot springs)

Hakuba Himekawa Onsen is at the base of the Goryu ski area, a short distance from Sneaky Peaks. Its indoor hot spring baths have mountain views and are the easiest way to soak tired legs after skiing. Hakuba Ryujin Onsen is another good option, known for its calm atmosphere. Ask us and we'll help you plan a visit.

Hakuba Ski Jumping Stadium

The venue for ski jumping at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. Take the chairlift to the top of the jump for views across the valley, and stand where the jumpers launch. Worth it for the views even if you're not a sports fan.

Hosono Suwa Shrine

A quiet shrine in Happo, a short walk from the Happo-One slopes. There's a local legend about lightning striking a tree in the grounds. On New Year's Eve, locals come here for their first shrine visit of the year, so you can see traditional celebrations.

Oide Park

A short drive from Hakuba village. In winter the park is covered in snow, with views of the Japanese Alps over the Hime River. The Oide suspension bridge is one of the best photo spots in the valley.

Day trips from Hakuba

Snow Monkey Park (Jigokudani)

Wild Japanese macaques bathing in natural hot springs, best seen in winter when there's snow around them. The walk in through the forest is part of the experience. Get there from Hakuba by bus or train; a shuttle runs from Yudanaka Station to the park entrance.

Zenkoji Temple, Nagano

One of Japan's oldest and most important Buddhist temples. Explore the old buildings, then walk the pitch-dark underground passage: find the hidden key and, legend says, you'll reach enlightenment.

Matsumoto Castle

One of Japan's oldest original castles, nicknamed "Crow Castle" for its black walls. The interior is all wood and you can climb through every level. About an hour from Hakuba.
